Lloyd Daniels (born September 4, 1967) is a former American professional and semi-professional basketball player who played in the NBA and the NBA Development League. He was one of the most sought-after prospects in the country during the 1986-87 recruiting cycle, standing 6’7″ and weighing 185 pounds. In his early 20s, he was widely regarded as the most gifted player to emerge from New York City since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He had, on the other hand, attended five high schools in three different states and could not read above the third grade level. He ultimately ended up to UNLV, where he was scheduled to play under renowned coach Jerry Tarkanian, but his plans fell through. One of Tarkanian’s aides, Mark Warkentien, took on the role of Daniels’ legal guardian and helped him get admission to Mt. San Antonio College, a junior college in the Los Angeles area, where he hopes to further his academic career. Daniels, on the other hand, was arrested on February 9, 1987, for allegedly purchasing crack cocaine from an undercover police officer. However, even though Tarkanian was renowned for accepting problematic players, this was too much for him and he declared only days after Daniels’ arrest that the player would never play for the UNLV Knights again. It was subsequently revealed that Daniels had been introduced to UNLV by Richard Perry, who had previously been convicted of bribery in sports twice. As a consequence of Perry’s participation, the NCAA launched an inquiry that eventually ended in Tarkanian’s resignation. After that, Daniels bounced about the professional levels for the next six years, and he went through three different phases of drug recovery. In 1988, he was fired from the Topeka Sizzlers of the Continental Basketball Association for failing to maintain proper physical fitness. A short time later, he joined with a team in New Zealand, only to be kicked off the squad due to excessive drinking on his part. Daniels was shot three times in the chest on May 11, 1989, yet he managed to live. He still has pieces of a bullet stuck in his right shoulder, which he believes was fired at him. Tarkanian maintained a close relationship with Daniels throughout the years. Immediately after high school, Daniels went on to play in the GBA (where he was voted MVP in his lone season), the New Zealand Basketball Association, the CBA, and the USBL, as well as in Greece with AEK Athens BC and in Turkey with Galatasaray, among other places. Daniels joined the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent in 1992-93, shortly after Tarkanian was appointed head coach of the team for the 1992-93 season. He had previously shown interest in the New York Knicks, who had flown him in for a trial during the off-season, but the Knicks ultimately decided not to sign him. Prior to signing with the Spurs, he had expressed interest in the New York Knicks, but the club ultimately decided not to sign him. During the summer league, Daniels worked very hard to get himself into NBA playing condition, and he was selected the Spurs’ starting point guard during the season’s first month. As it turned out, Daniels put on an amazing performance against the Knicks during the preseason, overwhelming his hometown club with 30 points in his first game on the Spurs’ home floor and energising the packed house. Tarkanian said in a storey published the following day in the New York Times that a Knicks scout had informed him after Daniels’ audition with the Knicks that Daniels “can’t play.” However, Daniels politely told reporters after the game that he appreciated the chance that the Knicks had provided him and that he was excited to finally have the opportunity to shine in the NBA, despite his poor performance.
